This patriotic Merdeka and Malaysia Day season, Sunset Terrace at Sunway Resort Hotel invites guests to embark on a deeply nostalgic culinary journey that pays homage to Malaysia’s most cherished national dish, the nasi lemak. From 22nd August to 16th September 2025, guests can indulge in a vibrant and flavoursome Nasi Lemak Buffet, a specially curated experience designed by the talented Junior Sous Chef Amir Roslie. This buffet is not just a meal but a heartfelt celebration of flavors, memories, and national pride that brings people together through the familiar and comforting aroma of nasi lemak.

The spotlight of this culinary showcase is, of course, the fragrant coconut rice. Believed to date back to the 15th century in the historic state of Melaka, this humble yet iconic dish has evolved over generations, becoming a symbol of Malaysian identity and unity. One of the most charming legends behind the name nasi lemak speaks of a daughter who accidentally spilled coconut milk into a pot of cooking rice. When her mother returned home and was greeted by the delicious aroma, she asked her daughter what it was. The daughter responded, “Nasi le, Mak!” This simple reply, filled with affection and spontaneity, is said to have inspired the name that has since become a household staple. Chef Amir breathes new life into this tale through his imaginative and colorful interpretations of the dish. Diners can look forward to variations such as Nasi Lemak Hijau Pandan, delicately infused with the essence of pandan leaves; Nasi Lemak Kuning Royal, featuring a rich blend of turmeric; Nasi Lemak Bunga Telang, tinted a brilliant blue with butterfly pea flower; and the timeless Nasi Lemak Putih, made using fragrant coconut milk and served in its classic form.

Every plate of rice is accompanied by an indulgent selection of sambals, each carefully crafted using premium local chilies and traditional techniques. Highlights include the robust Sambal Bawang, which offers a punchy oniony heat, and the delicately layered Sambal Nyonya, which draws on the Peranakan tradition of slow-cooked spices.

Elevating the dish further, a showcase of premium ikan bilis varieties is on offer, including the rare Ikan Bilis Mata Biru from Pangkor and the refined Ikan Bilis Jepun.

These crispy anchovies, each with their own texture and flavor profile, offer a satisfying contrast to the rich-flavored rice. Alongside these, a colorful spread of traditional condiments and sides completes the dish, including a variety of keropok and a trio of savory Chicken, Beef and Fish Serunding, each slow-cooked to perfection and bursting with spices.

The buffet also features a rotating menu of traditional hot dishes that span the many influences that make Malaysian cuisine so distinctive. Guests can savor classic favorites such as the golden and aromatic Ayam Goreng Berempah, tender and spicy Cockles Rendang, fiery and rich Chili Fried Beef Paru and the intensely flavorful Sambal Sotong.

Also on offer are Daging Dendeng, a sweet and spicy dry beef preparation, as well as hearty rendang options featuring lamb and chicken. Vegetarian diners are not forgotten, with comforting options such as Tempeh and Tauhu Goreng Kicap, and Stir-Fried Kangkung with Belacan adding even more variety and color to the meal.

For those looking to indulge even further, Sunset Terrace offers the option to add on a Premium Durian Buffet. Featuring a carefully selected variety of durians known for their creamy texture and bold flavor, this decadent experience can be enjoyed as an add-on to the buffet or as a standalone treat.
