While the late Khalil Ibrahim showcases the simplicity of life through this piece entitled, ‘East Coast Farmers’, there’s nothing simple about it. There is complexity with every brushstroke, bringing to life the everyday antic of a farmer. Using an earthy palate, Khalil painted a chiseled farmer clad merely in a sarong amid a paddy field and undulating hills as the backdrop. Khalil Ibrahim was a master storyteller and through allegory, he told the tale of his origins, the Malaysian East Coast and landscapes that fuelled his passion. Khalil’s landscape works were undoubtedly his forte and beloved by his collectors. This is owed to his attention to extraordinary detail, artistry and sheer passion.
