A seminal figure in Malaysian modern art, Abdul Latiff Mohidin is celebrated for his poetic fusion of nature, abstraction and Southeast Asian visual sensibilities. His landscapes often move beyond literal representation, transforming natural forms into expressive, almost elemental compositions. In Rock Landscape, Latiff Mohidin reimagines the rugged contours of geological formations through a striking palette of red, yellow and fiery orange. The warm hues give the rock-like forms an ignited, molten quality, evoking sun-baked stone, volcanic heat and the elemental fire of the natural landscape. Set against an equally vibrant ground, the formations appear to emerge organically from the surface, blurring the boundary between landscape and abstraction. The work demonstrates the artist’s ability to distil nature into powerful forms, colour and energy while retaining a profound sense of place.
