Balik Pulau painted in 2004 is a masterful watercolour that captures the lyrical beauty of the Malaysian landscape through the artist’s refined command of colour, light, and atmosphere. Inspired by the tranquil surroundings of Balik Pulau, Penang, the composition is rendered in fluid washes that dissolve forms into harmonious passages of colour, evoking the gentle rhythms of nature rather than a literal depiction of place. The transparency of the watercolour medium lends the work an ethereal quality, reflecting Syed Ahmad Jamal’s ability to transform the landscape intoa deeply poetic and contemplative experience.

Educated at the Chelsea School of Art in London and later at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Syed Ahmad Jamal developed a unique artistic language that seamlessly fused modernist abstraction with Malay aesthetics, Islamic philosophy, and the natural environment. Throughout his distinguished career, he championed the development of Malaysian art through his roles as artist, educator, curator, and cultural leader.
