Khoo Sui Hoe’s Celebration is a monumental masterpiece from the artist’s celebrated late period, embodying the dreamlike lyricism and poetic symbolism that define his distinguished oeuvre. Measuring an impressive 175 × 244 cm, the oil on canvas unfolds as a richly imagined landscape populated by ethereal figures, floating forms, and luminous colours, inviting viewers into an introspective world where memory, imagination, and emotion coexist. Characterised by fluid brushwork and a harmonious palette, the painting exemplifies Khoo’s remarkable ability to weave personal narratives into universal themes of joy, hope, and the human spirit.

Born in Kedah in 1939, the late Khoo Sui Hoe is regarded as one of Malaysia’s foremost modern masters, celebrated for his distinctive surrealist inspired visual language and unwavering commitment to poetic expression. Over a career spanning more than five decades, his works have been exhibited internationally and are held in important public and private collections throughout the region. Painted in 2011, Celebration was selected for inclusion in the landmark exhibition Khoo Sui Hoe: Inscapes Through the Year, held at Pipal Fine Art from 29 April to May 2012, and is illustrated on page 62 of the accompanying exhibition catalogue. This important provenance underscores the painting’s significance within the artist’s mature body of work.
