Yeoh Jin Leng’s Melawati series reflects the artist’s lifelong fascination with the Malaysian landscape, where observation, memory, and painterly expression converge in compositions of remarkable atmosphere and harmony. His confident handling of colour and light, coupled with a refined sense of structure, transforms familiar scenery into evocative visual experiences that celebrate the beauty and spirit of the local environment. Born in 1929, Yeoh Jin Leng occupies a distinguished place in the development of Malaysian modern art. Originally a school teacher in Ipoh, his artistic journey began during his studies at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College in Kirkby, Liverpool, in 1952. After pioneering educational service in Kuala Terengganu, he became the first recipient of a Federal scholarship to pursue art at the Chelsea School of Art and the Institute of Education, University of London. Upon returning to Malaysia, Yeoh made significant contributions to both the visual arts and industrial design, serving as Design Coordinator for Selangor Pewter, where he created iconic works including the Four Seasons Vase and a celebrated series of Malay Kerises. His influence extended well beyond his own artistic practice. As Dean of Studies at the Malaysian Institute of Art from 1985 until 1994, Yeoh mentored a generation of young Malaysian artists before dedicating himself fully to painting. He later served on the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery, where, as Chairman of the Programme Committee, he played an instrumental role in shaping exhibitions and advancing the nation’s artistic landscape. The Melawati series exemplifies Yeoh’s mature vision, demonstrating the lyrical elegance, technical assurance, and deep appreciation for Malaysia’s natural heritage that have made his works enduringly sought after by collectors.
