Works from late 1960’s by Jehan Chan represent an important early phase in the artist’s development, where his mastery of Chinese ink and watercolour on paper began to fully emerge. During this period, his depictions of fishing villages already demonstrate a confident synthesis of traditional Chinese brush techniques with local Malaysian subject matter. In these early works, Jehan Chan captures the essence of coastal life through fluid, economical brushstrokes and subtle tonal washes. Clusters of wooden houses, moored boats, and quiet waterways are rendered with a poetic restraint, often enveloped in a soft, atmospheric haze. The compositions favour mood over detail, evoking a sense of stillness and timelessness that reflects the rhythms of village life.
