A leading figure in Malaysian contemporary art, Rafiee Ghani graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology (now UiTM) before furthering his studies in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Widely recognised for his expressive abstract landscapes, Rafiee’s paintings draw inspiration from nature, memory, and the environment, translated through richly layered colours and dynamic brushwork.
Painted in 1999, Air Biru II exemplifies Rafiee’s lyrical abstraction, presenting a vibrant composition that suggests a body of water hidden within a lush landscape of flowers and trees, rendered in a myriad of luminous hues. Balancing spontaneity with compositional harmony, the work reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with colour, atmosphere, and the poetic essence of the natural world, making it a compelling example of his celebrated artistic vision.
