Starting out as an apprentice machinist before landing a job as an assistant curator for an art gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Maamor Jantan received his initial introduction here to the world of visual arts and its artists. It was only after meeting the inimitable Khalil Ibrahim in 1984 and studying under him for more than a decade that he ventured into art.
The Cakcibor Series (Dragonfly series), which has become his signature motif in recent years, is the primary medium for his artwork. He demonstrated his close relationship with Nature by depicting the “cakcibor” with their delicate, transparent wings. “I wished for others to comprehend the fragility of life. At the same time, I did not want them to harm the environment and I wanted them to understand how critical it is to preserve our ecology”, the artist said.
