One of Southeast Asia’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, Ahmad Zakii Anwar is celebrated for his technical virtuosity and psychologically charged imagery. Largely self taught, the Malaysian artist first gained recognition through his evocative figurative paintings before expanding his practice into works that explore spirituality, memory and the complexities of the human psyche. His works are held in numerous prominent public and private collections across Asia and beyond.
Created in 2005, Purple Buddha reflects a pivotal period in Zakii’s practice, when he began incorporating spiritual iconography into his richly layered visual language. Executed in mixed media on paper, the work presents the serene image of the Buddha enveloped in luminous shades of violet and purple, colours traditionally associated with contemplation, wisdom and transcendence. Through the subtle layering of materials and expressive surfaces, Zakii transforms the familiar religious figure into a deeply personal meditation on stillness and inner awakening.
