Born in Pantai Sabak, Kota Bharu, Ismail Mat Hussin studied under Nik Mahmood before becoming a protégé of Khalil Ibrahim. He became a full- time artist in 1968 and remained closely devoted to the batik medium throughout his career.
In Durian Seller at Siti Khadijah Market, Kota Bharu (2011), Ismail captures the bustle of the market through vendors handling and selling durians, with the fruit prominently scattered across the foreground. His intricate batik technique, warm earthy palette and detailed figures transform the everyday scene into a vivid record of Kelantanese life and culture.
