Abdul Latiff Mohidin’s Berlin Series marks a pivotal juncture in the artist’s trajectory. While studying at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in West Berlin during the early 1960s, he was immersed in the vibrant art scene, exposed to avant-garde movements like Cubism, Futurism, and Surrealism. This European influence, however, did not eclipse Mohidin’s deep-rooted connection to his Southeast Asian heritage. His Berlin works reveal a fascinating interplay between the abstract forms and geometric structures of Western modernism and the organic, biomorphic shapes inspired by his native landscape. This fusion is evident in his exploration of line, form, and space, resulting in compositions that are both intellectually stimulating and visually arresting.
