Thomas Yeo is one of Singapore’s foremost second generation artists, celebrated for his evocative landscapes that bridge representation and abstraction. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts who later furthered his studies at the Chelsea School of Art and Hammersmith College of Art in London, Yeo has long been admired for his masterful command of colour, texture and atmosphere. In recognition of his significant contribution to Singapore’s visual arts, he was awarded the prestigious Cultural Medallion in 1984.
Painted in 1987, Scenery exemplifies Yeo’s lyrical interpretation of the natural world. Rather than recording a specific locale, the artist evokes an imagined landscape where mist laden mountains, tranquil waters and delicate skeletal trees emerge through layered washes of earthy browns, olive greens and luminous ochres. The composition possesses an ethereal stillness, with subtle tonal transitions creating an illusion of depth and quiet contemplation. Fine linear accents and textured passages reveal Yeo’s intuitive handling of watercolour, transforming the medium into one of remarkable richness and atmosphere.
