These two watercolours capture the timeless beauty of the Malaysian countryside and coast that became synonymous with A. B. Ibrahim’s artistic vision. In Tepi Pantai, a traditional sampan rests quietly by the shore, framed by coconut palms and kampung houses, evoking the peaceful rhythm of a seaside village. Its companion, Tepi Sawah Padi, turns to the rural landscape, celebrating the open expanses and gentle atmosphereof the paddy fields.
Born in Alor Setar, Kedah, in 1925, A. B. Ibrahim was a largely self taught painter and one of the founding members of Persatuan Pelukis Melayu (Society of Malay Artists, Malaya). He devoted much of his career to watercolour, becoming renowned for romanticising local landscapes and everyday kampung life. His nostalgic depictions of paddy fields, fishing villages, coconut groves and boats remain important visual records of a Malaysia that has gradually disappeared.
