A celebrated master of Malaysian batik art, Ismail Mat Hussin is renowned for his vivid depictions of East Coast village life and cultural traditions. Throughout his career, he transformed everyday scenes into enduring visual records of Malaysia’s heritage, capturing the spirit and resilience of local communities.
This 2010 batik painting portrays fishermen gathered around their nets along the shoreline, engaged in the communal labour that has sustained coastal communities for generations. The intricate web of nets dominates the composition, drawing attention to the themes of cooperation, diligence, and shared livelihood. Traditional fishing boats in the background further anchor the scene within Kelantan’s maritime culture.

Rendered in Ismail’s characteristic palette of earthy browns, ochres, and warm golden tones, the work showcases his mastery of the batik medium through its rich textures and delicate crackle effects. More than a documentary image, the painting is a tribute to the enduring traditions and collective spirit of Malaysia’s fishing communities.
