In both The Garden Outside VII and XI works, Rafiee Ghani revisits one of his most recognisable subjects – the garden with a quieter and morecontemplative sensibility. Painted in oil on paper, the artworks echo the organic forms and layered composition of his celebrated Garden and LeJardin series, but are distinguished by a more subdued and harmonious palette. The interplay of foliage, flowers and expressive marks creates anintimate impression of nature, allowing colour and atmosphere to take precedence over literal representation.
Born in Kulim, Kedah, in 1962, Rafiee Ghani is one of Malaysia’s prominent contemporary artists. He began his art education at the De Vrije Academie Voor Beeldende Kunst in The Hague in 1980, before continuing at Institut Teknologi MARA and later Manchester Polytechnic, where he obtained a Master of Fine Prints in 1987. His artistic language is strongly influenced by European masters including Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse, evident in his distinctive use of vibrant colour, dynamic brushwork and expressive composition.
