Khoo Sui Hoe presents a solitary female figure immersed in the quiet tranquillity of nature. With her short hair and serene expression, she appearscompletely at ease within her secluded surroundings, while the still water and darkening evening sky enhance the work’s dreamlike atmosphere.The composition reflects Khoo’s recurring exploration of solitude, innocence, fantasy and freedom.
A leading figure of the Nanyang art tradition, Khoo pursued a full-time career in art after graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1961. He later received the John D. Rockefeller III Fund grant in 1974 to study at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York. His distinguished careerhas been celebrated through numerous solo and retrospective exhibitions, including The Painted World of Khoo Sui Hoe at the Penang State Art Gallery in 2007.
