Lee Long Looi was a prominent Malaysian artist whose practice embraced painting, drawing and printmaking, often drawing inspiration from the people, landscapes and everyday life of Southeast Asia. His works are distinguished by their sensitive observation and strong sense of atmosphere. In Fishing Village, Penang, Looi captures the quiet rhythm of coastal life, depicting fishing boats gathered alongside a traditional stilt village. Rendered in delicate watercolour washes, the composition conveys the gentle movement of the water and the intimate relationship between the fishing community and its surroundings. The elevated wooden dwellings and boats create a nostalgic portrait of Penang’s disappearing coastal heritage.
