A founding member of the influential Matahati collective, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed is celebrated for his innovative use of collage, found materials and layered symbolism. Since graduating from Universiti Teknologi MARA in 1992, he has established himself as one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary artists, developing a distinctive visual language that blends everyday objects, decorative motifs and cultural references into thought provoking compositions. His early butterfly works earned critical acclaim and marked a significant chapter in his artistic development.
Created in 1999, this series of works from the Butterfly Series exemplifies Ahmad Shukri’s fascination with transformation, beauty and impermanence. Dominating the composition is a striking black butterfly, juxtaposed against vivid fields of pink, yellow and green, interwoven with fragments of batik textiles, ornamental lace and printed imagery. The layering of disparate materials evokes the richness of Malaysia’s cultural landscape while blurring the boundaries between painting, collage and assemblage.
