10 Self-Improvement Goals for 2019

BY HIRANMAYII AWLI MOHANAN

It’s that time of year again to renew our body, spirit and goals. As we embark on the adventures of the new year, it’s time to reflect and better ourselves by setting realistic, achievable goals. Goals give you something to strive towards, encourage you to be your best self, and give you direction in everyday life. In this article, we give you 10 tips that are focused on self-improvement and growth.

1. READ 24 BOOKS.

If a book a month sounds too easy for you, push it to two. Mix up your genres to keep it interesting. Make at least one of it a book that intimidates you. For us, it’s history.

2. AIM FOR LESS DAILY SCREEN TIME.

We have been conscious of our screen time ever since Apple added the “Screen Time” feature. It gives us the hard truth, and it honestly shocked us that we look at our phones more times than we realise. Moreover, most of that time spent on the phone is on social media which is not only unnecessary, but unhealthy too. We bet a lot of us are doing the same thing so hopefully, in 2019, we can reduce that alarming number.

3. DO A NO-SPEND CHALLENGE.

We have to admit; this particular tip is a challenge for us. It’s easy to spend money without realising it, whether it’s in your account or not. When you look into your monthly statement and realise you’ve spent way over what you can afford, ask yourself if you actually needed or are using the items bought. The principle behind a no-spend challenge is making one more mindful of their purchases and holding off on impulse. The ultimate question one needs to ask when shopping is whether that item is essential.

4. GO SOMEWHERE YOU’VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE.

Travelling opens us up to new people and new experiences. In turn, these things give us a new perspective on life and can teach us valuable lessons we otherwise never would have learned. We don’t have to go overseas when our home country, Malaysia is truly beautiful. Weekends are the perfect opportunity to travel to different states in Malaysia for a short getaway. Alternatively, adventure seekers can embark on a journey to discover the natural beauty such as waterfalls and majestic hills this country has to offer.

5. RUN A 5K WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS.

Get a group of friends together and sign up for a 5k! Being active is not only great for your health, but it’s a less expensive way to also cultivate friendships. Instead of going out to eat, meet up to take a jog around the park for training. You’ll get to spend time together and also stay in shape. Can’t beat that!

6. PRACTISE PATIENCE AND KINDNESS.

We know that being patient is easier said than done. It’s hard to wait in a world where we’re used to getting everything instantly. Instead of rushing through a day to day life, take time out of your day to enjoy the present. Slow down, rest, and find quiet moments every day to breathe deeply and enjoy where you are right now. What the world needs now is patience and kindness. We could all be a little kinder to each other and a little kinder to ourselves. Practise daily affirmations, give compliments without expecting anything in return, put our empathy skills to good use on a daily basis. We will all be better off for it.

7. LEARN A NEW SKILL

Pick up a new skill in 2019. It could be learning a new language at YMCA or learning to bake. Essentially, what learning a new skill does is it helps foster confidence which subsequently promotes motivation to learn more and the cycle fuels itself. Don’t be fearful of how difficult it may be. You can easily learn new skills on the Internet watching videos, attending free courses or workshops at YMCA and stores, or by reading some books.

8. MEDITATE DAILY

Since you probably have more time on your hands now that you have less screen time, try meditating. Start off with 10 minutes and purge your mind of thoughts and just be present. There are various forms of meditation, so you are sure to find one that is right for you. As you start out with meditation, take things slow. For some of us, it could take some time before we are able to clear our minds and really get good at meditating.

9. FOLLOW YOUR PASSION

It’s rather dreary working a 9-5 job that doesn’t make you happy. After all, life is too short to settle for something you can derive happiness from. Choose actions that appeal to you and are in line with your values. Pick people you like being around and be sure to your heart while not running from the hard issues. Become a Master in the Art of Living where people can’t tell if you’re working or playing because, to you, you’re always doing both!

10. RELINQUISH YOUR CONTROL OVER UNIM – PORTANT THINGS

Being in control is addictive, and like any other addiction, you might feel compelled to do it. But, bear in mind that giving into it amplifies your anxiety, frustration and stress. So rid yourself of unnecessary stress.
