DINING OCTOBER 2021

Back Alley Pasta

BY HIRANMAYII AWLI MOHANAN

For all the foodies out there, we know that there is always room for Italian food, but what about Asian-Italian food? Amidst the bustling lanes and streets of Ampang, inconspicuous to the unaware, lies the little kitchen of Back Alley Pasta. Working on a limited and carefully curated menu, the chef at Back Alley Pasta serves up pastas, rice bowls, and even antipasti to satisfy your cravings. So, if you are a comfort food seeker, we have found just the place for you.

A key highlight of this establishment is that the pasta is freshly handmade in-house for all its dishes, ensuring each dish is served with the best quality and freshness of ingredients. From its menu, our favourite is the Squid Ink Tagliolini Carbonara, fresh tagliolini pasta handmade using premium Spanish squid ink, drenched and smothered in a creamy carbonara sauce and dressed with Grana Padano parmesan cheese and smokey pork bacon. Diving into the selection of bowls, we got to try its best-selling Pork Katsu with Asian Pesto Rice, crispy and juicy pork katsu breaded, fried and drizzled with the inhouse Yuzu tare served on a bed of Japonica rice tossed with Asian pesto and pickled torch ginger and lemongrass. It is then garnished with lard nuggets, red radish and even more pickled torch ginger and lemongrass.

Truly a fusion of an unlikely pair, Back Alley Pasta’s fusion of Italian and Asian influences is not to be missed.
