Defined as the artistic expression of the here and now, broadly spanning a ten year period, Malaysia’s contemporary art scene is definitely one-of–its–kind. This year, this harmonious, much awaited event takes place from July right up to September. Malaysian artisans and artists have always gone beyond cultural, ethnic and religious boundaries to find their inspirations, influencing the way in which the country’s crafts, cuisine and architecture were created.
The Malaysian contemporary art also refers to the rise of an ongoing and thriving art movement that doesn’t rely or depend on the parameters or academia of strictly-European approaches to art production, reinventing itself in the image of its own aesthetic language, content and techniques, thus elevating itself to international status in the process.
In conjunction with this prestigious art festival, Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin launched a fitting tribute to Malaysian contemporary art on June 7, 2010, which took place at Bandar Raya Developments Berhad (BRDB)’s Bangsar Shopping Centre. The launching of the Aliya and Farouk Khan Collection Book was a tribute to the depth and breadth of contemporary artistic talent here in Malaysia.
The Aliya and Farouk Khan Collection represents the largest collection of contemporary Malaysian art in the country. This unique collection has become the most important body of artwork in terms of curatorial and historical importance as well as value. It traces the development of modern Malaysia through the art process.
It is based on the strong belief that the works of contemporary Malaysian artists are of international standard. The Khans are determined to highlight this important fact
