Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest state had the honour of hosting the Pacific Travel Association (PATA) Annual Meeting 2010 last month at the Borneo Convention Centre. Sarawak, with its exotic, mysterious and unspoilt landscape is an ideal destination for all types of conventions and meetings. Here, old world charm is complemented by the blessings of the modern technology and corporate culture. It is one of the few places in the world where you can escape from the pressures of everyday life in a beautiful natural setting.

It’s the perfect environment to unleash new ways of thinking to thrive in today’s challenging business environment which made it a perfect venue for PATA’s annual meeting. Malaysia aims to become a fully developed nation by 2020. Sarawak is fully integrated into that dream, and is constantly seeing significant upgrades in infrastructure to attain that goal.

The state-of-the-art Borneo Convention Centre Kuching where the PATA meeting was held offers cutting-edge facilities for today’s convention planners. With offerings that cater to up to 5,000 delegates and banquets up to 2,000 guests per day, this is the latest treasure of the convention world.

The establishment of SCORE or Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy is set to expand the growth of Sarawak. An area stretching 320km in the central region of this state has been earmarked for development because of its abundance of natural energy resources. This undertaking will bring about much needed economic advancement and lift the people’s standard of living and quality of life.

As a destination, Sarawak or well known as the ‘Land of Hornbills’ boasts some of the most spectacular sights and exciting adventures. It provides modern facilities and accommodation against a fascinating backdrop of the world’s oldest rainforests. This combination is a match made in heaven to be experienced by all. Post-conference true adventure await delegates who are up for it. Beyond the coast lies the best and wildest of nature in the whole of Malaysia.

Stunning sceneries of primary jungle, mist-shrouded mountains and clear undulating rivers awaits all those who want to explore and discover the beauty that this state has to offer. Sarawak being rich in culture with 27 ethnic groups, has a blend of traditional and contemporary elements. A visit to the Sarawak Cultural Village will unveil its main ethnic groups as well as their way of life.

Set in a tranquil and scenic location, it displays the culture of these people in terms of their artifacts, artworks as well as their colourful and vibrant dances and attire. With all these abundant offerings, Sarawak was indeed the perfect host for PATA’s annual meeting as well as any convention on the global front where business meets adventure.
