A sports bar which exudes homeliness, Home & Away at Desa Sri Hartamas is the one-stop avenue to be, come this World Cup season. Decorated with football elements such as miniature jerseys, pictures of the World Cup trophy and players and most importantly TV screens to watch your favourite match, this bar is a perfect chill-out place for all football crazies. Not only is this place known for its selection of beers and liquors, it is also known for its scrumptious fare. Upon entering the premises, my friend and I were greeted by Ben, the manager- cum-chef who presented us with some of the outlet’s famous dishes.

We started off with an appetiser, the Crispy Fish (RM15) which is a platter of fried fish mixed with capsicum, onions, carrots and lettuce. The fish like its name is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Next came the Butter Prawns (RM16). Now this was a favourite for my friend and I. The prawns tasted fresh and succulent without being too soft. It is a dry dish with curry leaves and the prawns have a buttery aroma in it.

The Mutton Fried Rice (RM16) is one of the signature dishes which is a favourite among the patrons there. It goes very well with a glass of beer. The fried rice tasted spicy and came with huge chunks of mutton which were tender and
juicy. Just when we thought we had had enough, a plate of Toast Master (RM10) was thrust into our hands. Being full, I reluctantly bit into this appetiser but imagine my surprise when I was taken away by its taste. Now I fully understood why Ben chose this dish as their signature dish among the others.

The Toast Master comprises pieces of baguette bread stuffed with onions, mushroom, cheese and bits of chicken. The cheese was soft and smooth. Its best eaten while still hot. The chicken was soft, the bread cheesy and just melted in our mouth easily. There are about eight pieces in a plate, fit for two but once you have had one you just want it all for yourself.

The beers and liquors here are reasonably priced where imported draft beers are priced at about RM13 (1/2 pint) and about RM18 (1 pint). Their single malt Whiskeys are priced at RM320 per bottle and RM700 for three bottles. Besides the food and beverage, the bar boasts two pool tables, which attract many players among the patrons. Home & Away itself has two teams. Each year, sometime between August and September, the bar collaborates with Dewar’s beer and holds an in-house pool tournament.

This World Cup season, Home & Away has obtained the license to extend its operating hours from 2.30pm to 4am instead of the usual 2.30pm to 1am. However, it only adheres to this timing during the important and favourite matches. Besides that, the front of the bar will be extended with canopy, fitted with two big screens and table and chairs provided for the final match. This is to accommodate more people to enjoy the final match. Home & Away is your personal abode to dine, chill and catch all your favourite matches with your buddies for football’s biggest legacy, the World Cup.
