Snuggled in a spacious garden amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, Euro Deli Grill is where you must head to if you want to have authentic Swiss-German cuisine alongside with tasty German beer in a friendly ambience. This bar-cum-café exudes the feeling of being in a fun-filled neighbour- hood with its bright, orange décor and is a favourite retreat among expatriates and locals alike.
Upon entering the premises, my friend and I were welcomed with warmth by its res- taurant manager-cum-chef, K.L. Chong. The dishes we had were all signature Swiss-Ger- man dishes that were recommended by Chef Chong as I had no inkling of Swiss-German delicacies.
The feast took off with the starter which was Erbsen Suppe, which is green pea soup (RM9.90). It is a green concoction prepared from freshly blended peas and garnished with sausages which are a must-have in German cuisine. The soup was proportioned as it was served in the right amount to start off without filling you up. It was thick with round slices of sausages in it. The creamy taste with chunky sausages were a perfect combination for the taste buds.
Next came the specialties. First up was the Gemischter Wurst Teller (RM32), which is a mixed sausage platter with three sausages of your choice. It consists of the Emmenthaler Wurst (pork sausage with cheese), Bratwurst und Kassler (pork ring sausage and Kassler ham) and Burne or Farmer’s Bratwurst (pork sausage with onion sauce). The platter came with mashed potatoes and Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage), which is a must for all Germans.
The Emmenthaler Wurst was chewy with loads of cheese oozing out of it. If you are a cheese lover, then this is the sausage for you. The Bratwurst und Kassler had a mixed taste where it was thick and chewy at the same time. Beware when you choose this sausage as just a few bites can fill you up. It is best to share this platter with a friend as the sau- sages are quite large. My personal favourite was the Farmer’s Bratwurst. It was well done and one bite into it will have your taste buds singing. It was absolutely juicy and the onion sauce complimented its taste. You will never stop at a single bite or even two.
Next was the Gebackene Schweins Haxe (RM28) which is roast pork knuck- les. The knuckles were wet with mush- room sauce and accompanied by the Sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Biting into the knuckles was sheer bliss. You will sink your teeth into the crispy, crunchy skin first and then you will be pleasantly surprised by the next delight, which is the meat. It is tender, soft and meaty. Together with the sauce, the first bite can take you straight to heaven.
To satisfy our sweet tooth, we were of- fered the Apfel Kuchen (RM15) which was homemade apple pie with vanilla ice cream and a German signature dessert, Rote Grutze (RM9.50) which were forest berries with cream. The apple pie had a warm crust with loads of apple slices, topped with vanilla ice- cream. The combination was scrumptious.
Be cautious when you take the first spoonful of the Rote Grutze as it won’t be sweet as your usual dessert. This thick jelly- like dessert which looks like raspberry jam, is sour with a tingle of sweetness and the first taste will send a rush to your brain. Neverthe- less, once the taste has sunk in, you will keep dipping your spoon in for more.
For those who want a taste of German beer, you can have it here at RM18 for 0.3 litre and at RM22 for 0.33 litre of imported Belgian beer.
For kosher Swiss-German delicacy in a chill-out atmosphere and a couple of beers after that to keep the night going, Euro Deli is the place you want to be!
