Having left Malaysia in 1973 at the age of 23, back during the reign of Tun Abdul Razak Bin Dato Hussein, Christopher Villenguz is back for his first visit after 37 long years. This time the reign is
being held by the former prime minister’s son, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“When I arrived at KLIA, my relative drove me back to my family home using the old road, and all the lush greenery along the way brought back so many nostalgic memories,” said Christopher, who now resides in Gympie, Australia.
The father of six who lived in Sentul prior to migrating had come home for a one month vacation with two of his children to meet his family.
“KL has changed so much. It is very urban now. There are more vehicles on the road. Back in the 70’s, there weren’t so many around. The highways are really good and it is so nice to take a drive down the north-south highway. It saves time, and it’s also quite a scenic route with the view of the mountains and green hill-tops,” he claimed.
Amidst all these changes he was pleasantly surprised to find an old coffee shop along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman which was his hangout place back then.
“I was shocked to see it still there. They still make coffee the same way, using the big

white sieve. It was a pleasure to have a cup of their coffee after all these years. The first sip just brought back all old memories,” he said.
“It’s really a pleasure being home and meeting all of my family members. I also got to enjoy the ‘char kuey teow’ and ‘ais kacang’. My sons, Eli and Joshua liked the ‘nasi lemak’ and ‘roti canai’.”
“Above all this is the fact that amidst all the vast changes in KL, there’s still a part of the old KL which remains. This trip has made me want to plan my next vacation here, this time with my whole family,” he said.
